Kazuri Designs

Kazuri,  which means "small and beautiful" in Swahili, is a hand shaped bead made by Nairobi women for Kazuri.  These ceramic beads are made from clay brought down from Mt. Kenya, handpainted, then kiln fired, glazed, and fired again.

Kazuri has supported struggling women since 1975 in an effort to bring employment and economic relief to the region. It now employs over 350 women who, with unemployment running 65% to 95% , often end up providing for up to 20 extended family members.

Because every Kazuri bead is handmade, each one is unique and slight variations in color and shape are inevitable. This is what makes Kazuri so appealing to those who treasure custom designed jewelry.

My distributor of Kazuri beads is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, an association whose members are committed to providing fair wages and safe and healthy working conditions for workers in developing countries.
